Korean Beauty Haul

Monday, December 26, 2016
It's been so long since I've been in the beauty blogosphere/ Youtube that when I wrote the title of this post, I spelt Haul ... Hall. On another note, there's something about December that really got into my head.  I've purchased a lot of things that I've been eyeing and there is really nothing in this haul that I haven't been thinking of for a long time. I'm usually not an impulse shopper but since I've steer clear of shopping for the past few months, I think things just built up and over a random stressful evening, it just all came out. In no means is this a show off. I really enjoy reading other people's hauls to get a feel of what's worth purchasing and just thought you might want to see as well.

Innisfree Ampoule Intense Foundation (C21) - I love Innisfree and loved their Ampule Cushion. However for the foundation, I'm really on the fence about it. It's oxidize like crazy on me and really not as glowy nor moisturizing as I had imagined.

Innisfree Oat Mild Moisture Sun cream - I've heard really good things about this sun cream and it lives to the hype. Unlike many other sun creams I've tried, this one smells amazing. It's a bit citrusy and really fresh. It's not the most moisturizing but it doesn't turn me into a grease ball.

Cosrx Ultimate Nourishing Rice Overnight Spa Mask - this is decently good although I still prefer my Innisfree Honey Sleeping Pack more.

Missha Matt Lipstick in Maple Latte - this is a treasure. It's a bit of a pumpkin, brown but still manage to get a bit of mauve it. I LOVE it and I'm not used to finding such a unique colour in a Korean brand.

Missha Eye Fit Stick Shadows - yes, they're back! I've reviewed three colours earlier this year and I honestly love these stick shadows so much, I had to get them in different colours.

Aritaum Real Lash Fixer - my eyelashes are tiny, sparse, and basically invisible. I really liked the Etude House Lash Fixers so I have high expectations for this one. So far, it has not disappointed. Unlike the Etude House one, this is a fixer and mascara in one.

Same Tip Concealer - I believe this is the brightener. You really have to layer a real concealer or foundation on top of this because it's super light.

Innisfree Lip Treatment Tint in Honey in Orange - I've been using Honey in Cherry all winter that I knew it was time to get this one. Between this and cherry, I prefer the cherry one. Despite the 'tint' part being minimal, Honey in Cherry's got a livelier pink. Honey in Orange is somehow less moisturizing and doesn't do much to liven up my lips.

Laneige Hydration Trial Kit - although I've taken better care of my skin since purchasing Cosrx, I kind of wanted to get back on the full Korean Skincare ways. I'm not getting younger and it's crazy dry here. I've always been a fan of the Lineage Sleeping Pack but really haven't tried much of anything else so I thought this would be a good way to pick out the winners. So far, I'm really enjoying everything but especially the cream and the serum.

That's it for my beauty haul.

1. Sephora Lip Stain Cream in #13 Marvelous Mauve
I put off purchasing this colour for the longest time. Why? Because it had always looked horrendous in the warm lights of Sephora. However, I'm glad to say that in normal lighting, this is such a pretty and trending colour.

2. Innisfree Lip Treatment Tint in #1 Cherry in Honey
I've reviewed this in the past before and after taking a break from it during the summer, I'm so happy to bring it back into my daily use. My lips have been crazy dry and chapped ever since it got cold here. I would put lip balm on and that'd was only like putting a bandaid on top of a crack. This lip treatment is a bit thick but it feels so wonderful on the lips and it looks beautiful too! It's like a lip gloss with a tinge of pink. My lips stay hydrated for quite a few hours and when the product wears off, they still feel a ton better than when I was just using lip balm. Plus, it tints my lip to a bright pinky natural colour. I'm actually considering getting a back up because this is all that I've been using all day everyday. The only downside is, I've noticed a little bit of leakage. To remedify this, I've been keeping it a small ziplock baggy.

3. Nars Lip Pencil in Cruella
I don't usually wear red lipstick but I thought it was really appropriate for a Christmas party I attended it earlier. The good thing about Cruella is that it's was really long lasting. Even though I had a sloppy burger, it didn't leave a bloody rim around my mouth. Instead, it stained and gracefully faded. Another thing that I really like about it is that it's not really the classic, bright Christmas red. It's still classic but slightly darker. It was surprising easy to apply for such a pigmented colour even for a red lip noob like myself. My friend loved it so much, she purchased it as well.

4. Elf Contouring Blush and Bronzer in Turks et Caicos
I picked this up spontaneously and did not expect to like it as much as I do. In pan and even in picture, the blush looks like a boring tan colour and the bronzer looks like chocolate. However, I'm glad to say that on my skin, they translate to different shades. The blush adapts to a much pinkier brown colour and the bronzer buffs right into the blush giving my cheeks even more definition.

5. The Body Shop Body Butter and Shower Gel in British Rose
This smells like the softest, truest roses. None of that powdery rose scent, this is definitely a more modern, soft, feminine rose scent with a hint of Peony. I actually liked it so much I got the Eau de Toilet which I don't like as much. It smells completely different as the Eau de Toilet is much sweeter, which overpowers the softness found in the body butter and shower gel, and a much stronger peony note that masks the rose scent.

6. Dawn over Riddarfjarden by Eugene Jansson
I had the pleasure of visiting the AGO to see Mystical Landscapes earlier this month. Although my friend and I were mainly there to see Monet and Van Gogh, the rest of the collection of was also impressively good. I love landscapes but I've mostly been into the Group of Seven. Eugene Jansson was a Swedish artist painter, and amongst some of the art displayed there, Dawn over Riddarfjarden was one of my favourite.

7. TV show -  Brooklyn Nine - Nine
This show  is a no brainer. No thinking at all. I've binged watch almost all three seasons while knitting (yes, I've picked up knitting). It's a comedy, police sit-com and about 20-ish minutes per episode. The main characters are slightly unlikeable but that's what makes them human. Although I've recommended this to several people, none of them liked it.

That's all my favourites for now. I apologize for the lack of updates. I've recently been addicted to online shopping so I'm sure you'll be seeing more posts soon!

What's On My Current Reading List

Saturday, December 3, 2016

Hi everyone, as winter is coming, I've been reading in my spare time. Reading was always one of my favourite past times in my childhood but like so many others, I had less and less time for it as I grew older. Today, I'm sharing with you what's on my reading shelf. As you'll see, I'm not really one to focus on a specific genre. Really! I'll read almost anything. Typically it takes me about two days to finish a book. Keep in mind that I wouldn't consider any of the books I'm reading now heavy at all. Hopefully this helps give you some reading suggestions.

1. The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena
I've been waiting to read this one for ages. After finishing Girl on the Train, which I really liked, and Gone Girl, I've been hooked onto the murder/thriller genre. When I first saw The Couple Next Door, the cover really intrigued me and I'm finally reading it now. Basically it's about a couple whose baby goes missing while they're over at their neighbours having a barbecue. A lot of secrets are revealed as they try to find out what happens.
Edit: I've finished this MEH in my opinion. If you didn't like Girl on The Train, you definitely won't like this one. At first it was okay but the plot became predictable and the characters one dimentional _ dislikeable.

2. Today Will Be Different by Maria Semple
Where'd You Go Bernadette was the first book I read from Maria Semple and like The Couple Next Door, it was the cover that really got me. I truly enjoyed Where'd You Go Bernadette as it was witty and fast pace. I've heard that Today Will Be Different is similar to WYGB but anything from Maria Semple, I'll read. That's how sold I am from WYGB.
Edit: This is even better than WYGB. Unlike most books, I took my time and truly slowed down to savour this one. This is a character driven book that really made me think about other people's perspectives as well as life in general. I highly recommend it!

3. Bridget Jones Diary: Edge of Reason By Helen Fielding
It may seem a bit controversial but I actually read all the other books in the series (including Bridget Jones' Baby - my favorite) this month except this one. I've already seen all the movies so I don't think I'm spoiling anything for myself. All the Bridget Jones books have been funny and sweet so I'm taking this one slow to savour. If you're a fan of Bridget Jones, I highly recommend the Confessions of a Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella.

4. The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman
I've never read anything from this author before but I'm really enjoying the book so far. It's about a couple who finds a baby and kept it to raise as their own. Later they find out their decision to do so has caused another person grief. The movie for this recently came out in theatres but with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Girl on the Train on my to watch list, I doubt I will have time.

5. Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware
The is the second book for Ruth Ware. The first one was In a Dark Dark Wood. I truly wanted to finish that one but there was a mix up and I've lost the book so I decided to move onto her second book for now. Woman in Cabin 10 is a mystery book as you can probably tell from the title. It's about a woman on a boat who witnesses another woman thrown off. However the number of passengers on the boat remains the same the next day. So it's a guessing game of whodunnit and how.

6. The Day The Crayons Quit By Drew Daywalt
I'm completely new to the realm of picture books but this one with all the sassy crayons captured my heart. Highly recommend!
Edit: I've also finished reading The Day The Crayons Came Home and it's even better. How's that possible?!

7. Eligible: A modern Retelling of Pride and Prejudice by Curtis Sittenfeld
This is my first book from Curtis Sittenfeld and so far it's definitely harder for me to get through than the other books. Although the title describes it all, it's basically the Bennets meet Darcy and Bingley but in modern day America.

That's it for now! What are some genres that you enjoy and books you recommend?

[REVIEW] COSRX Advanced Snail 92 All in One Cream

Tuesday, November 8, 2016
Today, I'm back with Part 2 of the Snail skincare regimen. As I've introduced the Cosrx Snail 96 Essence review, I'm following up with the cream.

"This Advance Snail All in One Cream that supports natural regeneration of damaged skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles."

I have to admit, until recently where I finally purchased a moisturizer that has SPF built in it, I didn't use sunscreen on a daily basis. I've tried so many in the past that were just too heavy, sticky, or shiny that I just didn't bother using it.  Now that I'm approaching my thirties, I'm just more mindful of my skin.  If this product addresses both wrinkles and skin damage, I'm all for it.

PACKAGING
This is very much a traditional tub of cream. Though, if given the choice I would much prefer it in a squeezy tube or a pump bottle. The plastic divider between the tin lid and the actual product stops things from getting messy. I'm also really happy they've included a plastic spatula because dipping your fingers into products is not hygenic at all.

As you pull up the plastic divider, you will see that a lot of the cream sticks to the it. The cream is slimy and it stretches so it can get a bit messy if you're not careful.

Like the essence, there isn't any scent to this product.

It's kind of an opaque gel-cream. It stretches a lot! Luckily the little spatula is able to scoop some out without mess or fuss.

This is how it looks on the skin. It spreads out thinly and nicely but doesn't absorb immediately. When it does try, I'm happy to say that it's completely matte. My skin usually feels velvet soft afterwards with no signs of the initial gooeyness.

PERFORMANCE
As I've mentioned in the previous post, I really enjoy the CORSX Snail 96 Mucin Essence. That one I find is highly moisturizing and absorbent. I thought I would feel similarly for the Advance Snail 92 All in One Cream but that's not the case. Although the cream is much thicker and slimy, I don't think it's as effective as the essence. As a cream, it's the final step in my skincare regimen. It comes after the essence. However, it's not as moisturizing. I don't know if it's just because of the dry Canadian climate but my skin stills feel a bit dry after wearing this. This wasn't the case with the Scinic Snail Matrix Cream. Not to mention, this takes such a long time to absorb compared to everything I've ever use. The only benefit is that it dries off without a trace.

OVERALL
I'm not a big fan of the tub packaging nor is this product hydrating enough for the climate I live in. I still enjoy that it feels light and dries down to a completely matte finish. If you're just looking to purchase one item from this snail line, go with the Essence. You'll get much more concentrated stuff and it's more effective. I'm still looking forward to trying other things from CORSX. Next pick on my list - CORSX Rice Ultimate Nourishing Overnight Mask.

[REVIEW] COSRX Advance Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence

Wednesday, October 26, 2016
I admit it, I've been out of the skincare game for a while now. It's just that with so many things happening, it wasn't at the top of my priority list (even though it should be somewhere up there). That's why I scourged sites for the top bestsellers and this game up. I've used products containing snail mucus before like the Scinic Snail Matrix Cream and even still I remember that it was super hydrating for the winter.

I've been hearing tons about the brand Cosrx from YouTubers and bloggers. They seem to be really booming in Korea at the moment. You'll see a few more product reviews coming up as I did end up buying more than one thing from this line.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

"THIS ADVANCED SNAIL GEL LOTION PROTECTS SKIN FROM MOISTURE LOSS AND KEEPS SKIN SMOOTH AND HEALTHY WITHOUT THE USE OF HEAVY OILS"

Advance Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence is created from nutritious, low - stimulation filtered snail mucin and other great ingredients, in order to improve damaged skin.

The filtered snail mucin contained in Advance Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence penetrates under the skin into the invisible, working against damaged skin.

This 96%-concentrate ingredient keeps your skin moist all day and finds your lost vitality".

INSTRUCTION

1. On the forehead and the nose, lightly touch so as not to cause heaviness
2. On the cheek, spread a generous amount and rub enough to soak into the skin
3. For under eye area, tap as if playing the piano, to make the skin absorb the essence.

I really like how this essence comes in a slim, clear plastic bottle. The pump is flatter and shorter than other pumps I've used before. However, it's very easy to control just how much product I want and also see how much product is left. One bottle comes with 100ml.

The consistency is quite watery with just a slight slimmy feel to it. However once applied onto the skin, it feels almost like water and absorbs quickly. I'm so happy to say there isn't any slim or shine left afterwards.

I like to apply this after cleansing and drying my face. It feels really fresh and light on the skin and I follow after it with a cream.  I am able to apply almost anything on top of it afterwards because it doesn't interfere with the consistency of my sunscreen or makeup. I've noticed that after I started using this, my skin has become incredibly soft and smooth. In terms of physical changes in my skin, I haven't really noticed anything just yet but I can feel the differences!

INGREDIENTS

OVERALL
I've really feel that this product has been making some really good changes to my skin. It's light enough to apply underneath everything and still feel highly moisturizing. I've also purchased the cream from this line but am looking forward to trying more from this brand as a whole. Have you tried anything from cosrx?

[TRAVEL] Ottawa

Monday, October 24, 2016
Hi everyone, recently I took a short friend with my friend for her birthday. I was surprised to hear that she's never been to Ottawa considering that it isn't "too" far away from where we live. Since she's a history major Ottawa was the perfect place to go.

If you're not familiar with Canada, Ottawa is the capital which is located in Ontario near the border to Quebec. As English and French are the official languages of Canada, you can hear both languages being spoken here. A little fact about me, although I've studied French since elementary school, at best I'm only conversationally good at it. Since I was only there for three days, I could only visit so many places. Here are some highlights of the trip. Enjoy!

[REVIEW] NYX LIP LINGERIE: 08 BEDTIME FLIRT

Sunday, September 4, 2016
Liquid lipsticks are in and the NYX Lip Lingeries have been all over YouTube for the past six months. I wasn't that interested in it until a fellow makeup enthusiast told me how much she can't wait for Canada to have them. Just like that, I noticed they were stocked at Shoppers Drugmart. Shoppers has the full 12 shades priced at $10.49 CAD. By the time, I saw them, a lot of the colours were already picked up leaving a few shades left. It was actually quite hard deciding which colour to chose as the promotional pictures don't really do a good job in showing how the colour actually is. A lot of the colours look incredibly similar in the tube. Let's just say I stood in the makeup isle for  quite a few minutes puzzled about which colour to get.

In the end, I grabbed 08 Bedtime Flirt because I liked the name. It's cheeky and reminds me of Charlotte Tilbury's Pillow talk. In case you don't know me, I'm quite light with a cool undertone. Pinky nudes that are two shades darker than my skin tone works best for me while anything peachy, or peachy brown tends to make my skin look shallow and washes me out.

COLOUR
It's really hard to describe Bedtime Flirt as it seems to look a bit different depending on the lighting.  Every shade in this line seems to have a bit of a greyish base but Bedtime Flirt has just enough pinky brown nude to work for me. The best way to describe it is that it's a medium tone pinky brown with a grey base. On my lips, it's just a tad nudier than my natural lip colour so it's perfect for me. I'd say that this looks best in natural lighting. In florescent lighting, like bathrooms, this looks downright grey for some strange reason! It's like the yellow lighting sucks out the pink tones.  If you really can't decide on a shade, regardless of your skin tone, Bedtime Flirt is probably your best bet.

I love how it makes my lips look flirty and pouty.

PACKAGING
Many people complain that the wand is too long and not flexible enough to apply the product on well. Personally, I didn't have an issue with either. My hands aren't the most stable but I was able to apply this in one go. If the applicator is anymore flexible, it would just be a mess. With the current shape of the wand, I am able to apply the edges decently.

CONSISTENCY and PERFORMANCE
The consistency is really light and mousse-like wet but it dries down completely matte and when it does, the vibrancy tones down as well so it's not as dark as it looks in the tube. The odd thing is that once it dried, my lips felt sticky whenever I pressed them together. Nothing patched off but it's just so unexpected to feel that tacky sensation! With one layer I was able to cover my lips entirely but I like to go over it again just to make sure everything is covered. Also, once it dries, it does not transfer.  Without food, I did find this product to last really well. It didn't smudge or budge the whole day. It also felt really comfortable on my lips for the most part. After a few hours it was a bit drying but nothing overwhelming. I really appreciate how this product didn't cling onto any patchy areas of my lips too.

This liquid lipstick only seems to rub off when it comes into contact with oil - like from a lip balm, fries, or greasy food. Once the oil rubs into the lipstick, it will wear off easily so a reapplication is necessary after eating. To remove this, you just need a oil based makeup remover. It will come right off!

*Edit* I've just tried the Sephora Collection Cream Stains in the colour Marvellous Mauve. Everyone has been raving about these saying that they last all day long while being comfortable. I have to say, I really, really like Nyx's Lip Lingerie formula better, at least in the way that they've made Bedtime Flirt. Separate review will be coming soon.
OVERALL
Will I get any more colours in this line? I have my eyes on Exotic, a brick red, and Lace Trim, a light pinky nude. I don't think that it's necessary to get one in every colour since some of the lighter colours look similar. As this line caters to a wide range of skin tones, I would just recommend purchasing the ones that you think will work with your skin tone.

ESQIDO x HOT RENFREW LAUNCH PARTY: ESQIDO LASHES IN UNFORGETTABLE REVIEW

Saturday, August 27, 2016
Recently, I've had the honour to be invited to a launch party by Esqido at Holt Renfrew at Yorkdale. It's funny because, although having lived in and around Toronto almost all my life, I've only been to Yorkdale twice... and this is the second time. The first time was when my friend had to blitz in Holt Renfrew to pick up a pair of Shu Uemura Farfallina falsies. It's funny how this time, I'm also in to get a pair of falsies as well.

Esqido lashes are made from mink hair that's naturally shed. They're really soft and light! From the card that I've received, they have 11 different styles ranging from extremely natural (Little Black Dress) to the very dramatic (Amp It Up).

The lashes were glued onto these sticks that we could hold up to our right eyes and see how the lashes will look on.

UNFORGETTABLE
The ones I chose was Unforgettable. They reminded me of the discontinued Kiss 06 lashes that I've been trying to replace for a while now.

When I saw Unforgettable, I knew it was love at first sight. It's natural enough for me to pull off on a day time event and glam enough to still wear through the night.

As you can see the lash band is decently thick but it's also very soft and bendable. The makeup artist, Tanya, who applied these on me, told me the trick to not having a lifting band is to tailor the lashes to fit the eyes. This also prevents it from poking the eyes with the ends. The lashes are very wispy. When removing the lashes, you just need a bit of oil-free makeup remover on a q-tip and dab the lash band. Gently lift the lashes off by holding the band not the lashes. With good care, I've heard these lashes can be used up to 20 times.

The lovely makeup artist, Tanya, of Holt Renfrew Yorkdale. She took such amazing care of my lashes and I during this lash fitting. Also thank you to Adrienne of Beyond the Exterior for taking this photo.

Here's a description from the Esqido Website

I'd say the recommendations are fairly accurate for me! My eyes range from Monolid to Hooded on given days and they're slightly downturned. However with Unforgettable, because there is a gradual shift from short to long, the increase length gives my eyes a upturn, cat eye lift - no surgery needed!

I wore these lashes for the day (and the next day) without any problems. They're super light weight so I almost felt like I  didn't have anything on. However, I would say that I'm quite use to wearing falsies so my experience might be different from first time false lash users.

The lashes are on the pricier side because they're mink so I would really consider these falsies a treat for a special occasion.

If you're unsure of which lashes to chose from they've got a lash quiz you can take.

I took this before I headed into the event and it was VERY accurate and helpful.

My other choice would be Lash Named Desire which is a tad thicker and more dramatic than Unforgettable.
Lash Named Desire

DAY 2
I wore these lashes for the second time the day after to capture these lashes in detail.

I just love how they curve up. This has got to be the most natural lashes I've worn in a while.

Companion Eyelash Glue
I feel like no one's really talked about the Companion Eyelash Glue. It's beautiful and it's amazing.  It's made specially for mink eyelashes and it's latex-free!

Just look at the packaging. It's got to be the best looking lash glue I've ever seen.

The tip allows for precision so it's great to carry out for nights where you're afraid the ends of your falsies will pop.

Even though this glue held my falsies on all day, it wasn't hard to remove at the end of the day.  If it does give resistance, just remember, a dab of oil-free remover will do wonders.

OVERALL
I've really enjoyed the Unforgettable eyelashes and the companion glue. Big thanks to Esqido for inviting me to this event and giving me my first introduction to mink false eyelashes!

[REVIEW] INNISFREE REAL FIT COLOR LIQUID in V2 Dried Azalea

Saturday, July 16, 2016

Matte liquid lipsticks have been in for a while now but I haven't tried ANY so far. Why? because it's mainly the higher ends that are making it and also I've heard that it's incredibly drying - which is why I'm so excited to see Innisfree, my favourite Korean brand, come out with some this summer. Okay, it's not really matte, it's velvet but it's close enough.

Innisfree Real Fit Color Liquids are not exactly matte liquid lipsticks. They come in two versions gloss and velvet. Velvet is close enough to matte that I'm willing to give it a try. The promotional pictures also look pretty amazing. I've purchased mine in V2 Dried Azalea.

PRICE
10 000 Won ~ 4.5g

CLAIMS

The velvet version claims a velvet feather like fitting with camellia oil for hydration and clear colouration - all which I'm happy to say is true. The product is very opaque even with one swipe and fits onto the lips really nicely with a velvet, almost powdery finish. The more you blend it out the more velvet like it becomes. No matter how long I wore it for, it never felt drying. I think it's similar to the NYX soft matte lip creams but better.

PACKAGING
Here is where one of the problems lie. The product comes in Innisfree's usually non-fuss, simple tubes with a flexible doe apply easily on the lips.

Here is where one of the problems lie. The product comes in Innisfree's usually non-fuss, simple tubes with a flexible doe foot applicator. The applicator picks up WAY too much product for the tip to apply easily on the lips. I would say the doe foot is not the right applicator for mousse products. They might have done better with a brush tip.

Because the tip is really flexible, if you don't use all the product before putting the product back in the tube, it gets onto the tube opening like this...

COLOUR

GLOSS VERSION

VELVET VERSION

The first thing you might have noticed is that the actual product of V2 is that it's not really all that true to the promotional picture. From the picture, I would assume that the colour be kind of a dusty rose / pinky mauve shade. The actually colour is a pretty average medium, cool tone pink leaning a bit red.

Top is one swipe, bottom is swipe blended out.

You can see that as it blends out, it goes from mousse to something of a velvet powdery finish.

APPLICATION

Since the wands pick up so much product, I had to be pretty careful when I applied it. I usually swipe in the centre and blend out the outer edges with my fingers. I'm really happy that the formula doesn't cling onto any dry patches and that it applies on smoothly because that makes it worth the hassle of application. You might want to swipe off the excess product for easier application. Although it does provide a velvet-powder finish, I would say that it takes a long time for it to become matte.

SCENT
A slight fruity, floral scent.

PERFORMANCE

Innisfree Real Fit Color Liquid is not what most would consider a traditional matte liquid lipstick. It never claimed to be either. It's a mousse that results in a velvet-powder finish that is also very comfortable and non-drying on the lips. The original cream consistency allows the product to spread onto the lips easily without clinging onto drier areas or clinging into patches.

The lasting powder on this is not that great since it rubs off onto everything but it doesn't leave an awful mess on the lips either. It fades evenly the way regular lipsticks will.

I don't think I would purchase more because it rubs onto things way too easily but I am happy with the colour I've chosen. Although it's nothing original and not true to the promotional, it's still a pretty bright colour for the summer.
